Kamala Harris’s Nomination Significant for Protecting Alaska’s Arctic, Says Alaska Wilderness League Action
Trump Signals Desire to Expand Drilling in the Arctic Refuge, Drawing Stark Contrast to the Biden/Harris Administration’s Conservation Stance

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Alaska Wilderness League Action is excited by the nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate. Harris’s official nomination comes just a week after former President Donald Trump doubled down on his intention to pursue oil and gas production in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) in an interview with Elon Musk, highlighting the broad policy differences between the two candidates. As America’s Arctic stands at a critical juncture—with 2023 marking the hottest year on record globally and unprecedented levels of greenhouse gas emissions—the next president faces a critical choice: prioritize climate change and thriving ecosystems or backslide into a period of destructive policies from which our environment may not recover.

Harris’s record in the Biden Administration and her unwavering commitment to protecting public lands, underscored by her co-sponsorship of the Arctic Refuge bills in 2017 and 2019, contrasts sharply with Trump’s stance on drilling in the Refuge. Alaska Wilderness League Action looks forward to Harris’s leadership in advancing our conservation and climate goals during this pivotal time.
